Google Penguin to switch to steady updates

A few weeks ago we published a History Of the Google Penguin Algorithm Update, compiling all the updates that have been confirmed by Google. Now it seems that Google will no longer be making major updates to the algorithm, but will rather be continuously maintaining it.

According to Search Engine Land, a Google spokesperson sent them the following statement:

“That last big update is still rolling out — though really there won’t be a particularly distinct end-point to the activity, since Penguin is shifting to more continuous updates. The idea is to keep optimizing as we go now.”

The Penguin Algorithm has traditionally been updated by being processed offline and, when ready, pushed online. However, now they will be pushing live updates on a more regular basis.

While this might seem disconcerting to many, it could actually be a positive step. Sites penalized by Penguin might not have to wait so long after fixing their problems before their rankings are regained. Hopefully this will help webmasters have better control over their rankings, by having the ability to fix problems and see results sooner, rather than waiting a year for the next update.

Since Penguin is not the only Google algorithm impacting the quality of search engine results, we recommend that you visit our Rank Risk Index often to be informed of SERP fluctuations. We’ve also compiled a thorough history of the various Google Algorithm updates and invite you to use the resources available on that page to improve your results.

Do you think this will be a positive move by Google? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.
