Google Adds New Shipping & Return Annotations in Search Results

Google is giving retailers the option to indicate in search results when they offer special promotions related to shipping and returns.

Retailers utilizing either free or paid listings in Google Shopping are eligible to take advantage of these new features.

The annotations, such as “Get it by Dec 24,” will also be displayed when product listings are returned in search results.

Google is introducing these specifically to target holiday shoppers, noting that US searches for “holiday gift ideas” in August have already surpassed 2020 levels.

Further, shoppers say they’ll intend to order online significantly more this holiday season than in previous years:

“As of June, 58% of U.S. holiday shoppers said they will shop online more this season than in previous years and 59% said they will shop earlier to avoid an item being out of stock.”

Searches are up and all signs point to an online shopping boom this holiday.

New Shipping Annotations in Google Shopping

Shipping annotations allow retailers to show customers they offer fast and free shipping.

Prior to today the only annotations available were either “fast” or “free.”

Now, retailers can add the following:

  • “Free delivery by Fri, Dec 24,”
  • “Get it by Dec 24”
  • “Free X-day”

That last one refers to free shipping promotions within X number of days, such as “Free 2-day shipping.”

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify to add shipping annotations to your product listings, you’ll need to have:

  • An active Merchant Center account with products opted into Shopping ads and free listings in the United States.
  • Active web conversion tracking in your Google Ads account.
  • Active products in your Merchant Center account which you can identify with these annotations.
  • Account-level shipping settings configured for special shipping promotions.
  • Product feed attributes shipping_label and transit_time_label
  • Product landing or detail pages and checkout pages with messaging that corresponds to the annotations.

New Return Annotations in Google Shopping

When setting up shopping listings retailers can choose to provide information about return and refund policies.

Return annotations give shoppers more confidence in their purchases knowing they can get a refund within a set period.

Prior to today the available annotations were generic and not applicable to any particular shopping season, such as “Free 30 day returns.”

Now, retailers can indicate a specific **** that holiday purchases can be returned by, such as “Free returns until Jan 31.”

To set up returns annotations, you’ll need to create return policies in your Merchant Center account.

Return policies can be associated with all products, with specific groups of products, or even a single product by using the return_policy_label attribute in your product feed.

Google My Business Mentor Trophy

Ben Fisher received a very limited Google My Business mentorship award. Well, it looks like a trophy. He said it is given out by the Google Product Expert group to very few people. He posted this photo on Twitter.

Survey Says Most SEOs Do Not Use Bing Webmaster Tools

Most SEOs do not login to Bing Webmaster Tools, a recent Twitter poll determined. The poll asked “SEO’s do you ever log in to Bing Webmaster Tools?”

  • 49.5% said No, they do not login to Bing Webmaster Tools
  • 36.2% said Yes, they do login to Bing Webmaster Tools
  • 14.3% said “does that even exist

So that says to me 63.8% of SEOs do not use Bing Webmaster Tools.

It had 1,220 results, which is a pretty big response.

This is a shame because Bing Webmaster Tools has a nice array of SEO diagnostic tools, even if you do not care about your Microsoft Bing search rankings.

Google’s Title/Header Change Does Not Impact Rankings

There are a lot of people asking if the title/header change Google made on August 17th has any impact on rankings. Like, is Google uses the new title it itself generated for ranking purposes. The answer is no, there was no ranking change with this – as I wrote originally.

I did cover this last week, but it was in the big Google announcement about this change and was likely overlooked.

The clearest response from a Googler on this question was from John Mueller of Google who said “no” this does not impact rankings:

Kevin Indig asked “If Google rewrites my title, does it take keywords in the title into account when it measures the relevance of a page based on the new or old title?” John said “no” as you can see above. John then added later “This is purely a display change. This is not meant to change rankings. It’s easier to separate things out for testing.”

Danny Sullivan from Google said it originally in a more confusing way. Well, it was confusing because Google’s new title thing uses the content on the page a lot more for the title. Google’s ranking system uses your content on your page. So technically, content on your page does impact rankings. But the title change is a display change and was not related to rankings.

The title tags and SERPs and and now Google is doing more of taking the H1 tag or at least on page content and kind of replacing that. So my question is, is Google moving away from using the title tag as more of a a weighted factor now or have they already done that because again we we optimize tile tags to make sure it’s
descriptive and it makes sense but if Google’s not really using it as a ranking factor. Is there any point so I just wonder if that’s a step in that direction and moving away from the reliance of title tags?

Here is how John Mueller responded:

Yeah. I don’t know what what the future will bring but at least at the moment it’s not the case that we’re saying title tags are irrelevant. They still matter for search, they do matter for for rankings as well. So even if our systems kind of rewrite something, then it’s not the case that we would say your page is irrelevant for what you had as a title tag. We would still use that for search.

SEOs Want Opt Out For Google Title Change But How

This Google title change has been causing a lot of stir in the SEO community. Personally, I think it will eventually blow over, like so many other things. But ultimately most SEOs by far want an opt out feature to force Google to use your HTML title tag over something else it finds on your page or pointing to your page.

The issue I have with a simple to use opt out or meta tag to force Google to use your HTML title tag is that it might be used as a default on popular CMS platforms. So if WordPress, Wix, Joomla and others by default implement this, it won’t solve the problem Google is trying to solve.

Google obviously found a way to make the titles it shows in Google Search better as a whole by using HTML titles less in some cases. Of course, SEOs found many examples of Google’s algorithm getting it wrong. But as a whole, I have to imagine Google would not have pushed this live if it didn’t see an overwhelming positive side to this change.

Heck, a poll from Marie Haynes kind of proves this (most people who are upset take polls, happy people don’t often fill out polls – according to a recent poll ;-P) :

So if Google adds a simple opt out of this, and people just use it and create really bad HTML titles, it will be an issue for Google who is trying to improve titles in its search results. So do we implement a robots meta tag and/or x-robots-tag for this like Fili Wiese’s poll says?

Honestly, if I was at Google, I would NOT do this. What would I do?

I would implement a tool in Google Search Console that first showed you all the pages Google is not using your HTML title tag and then give you a way to opt out in bulk or on an individual basis.

This report would show you the HTML title tag compared to the title Google wants to use. It would show you your CTR before and after the change from Google Search. Then you can make an informed decision if you want to force Google to use your HTML title tag or use what Google came up with.

Plus, most novice site owners likely would not know to use this report and only more savvy SEOs who likely write solid HTML title tags would use this. So it would be a win win.

So I think it should not be a meta tag but rather a Search Console report with a way to force Google to use your HTML title tag.

With that in mind, John Mueller of Google said what will happen soon is more changes and tweaks to what Google did. He said in Friday’s video at the 28:32 mark “I suspect with with all of the feedback that we’ve gotten around title tags what will happen is we’ll do a bunch of iterations in the algorithms. Which on the one hand I think will make things better on the other hand SEOs will always be like oh no more changes. But hopefully there’ll be reasonable changes or changes that you all think makes sense as well.”

John did said on the opt out meta tag concept, “there was also a little bit talk about having some kind of opt-out meta tag or something like that. I don’t know. Personally, I don’t see that happening at least not in the near future because it’s also something that we didn’t really need in the past as well. And making a setting just because the algorithm currently is maybe a little aggressive in that direction
that seems like the wrong approach. Because it should be something we should improve in the algorithm not rely on an extra setting to get a handle.”

Google: Lighthouse Scores Do Not Affect Google Search

Google’s John Mueller, with a tad of annoyance, posted on Twitter that “lighthouse scores do not affect Google Search.” He then shares a tweet about people cloaking and cheating their lighthouse scores as a scam to trick Google.

Here is John’s tweet:

John wrote, as you can see, “Doing this kind of user-agent cloaking is a terrible idea – you’re just deceiving yourself. It makes absolutely no sense, and prevents you from finding real issues. If you run across a plugin that does this, report it to the CMS.”

Semrush: Google Dropped HTML Title Tags Usage By 77% & Replaced Those With H1s 75% Of The Time

Mordy Oberstein, Head of Communications at Semrush, shared some really early data on the Google title change we’ve all been obsessed with. In short, the number of Google search results showing with the HTML title tag on the SERP dropped 77% on average and when that happened, roughly 75% are utilizing the H1 instead of the HTML title tag.

As a reminder, Google said it still uses HTML title tags for 80% of the queries. But I did ask Google numerous times, what was the usage of HTML title tags for titles prior to this change and have not heard back.

He posted these two data points on Twitter this morning. Please note, Mordy only looked at 2,000 URLs, so it is not the biggest data sample at all.

Point One: :Since the end of July the # of results showing with the title tag on the SERP dropped 77% on average!”

Point Two: Not all overwrites utilize the H1 – of the titles being overwritten… roughly 75% are utilizing the H1 instead of the title tag.

Mordy did add that “not all overwrites are dramatic.” He said “Some just drop the brand name from the title. Also, many H1s are similar to the title tags – You can’t always just “look at the SERP” to see the overwrite.”

Mordy also just added this data that shows “overall it seems about 44% of titles on the SERP and title tags match (dataset ~3K keywords).” That is far less than the 80% Google said.
